REEL Birth Cinema Presents: Born Free

Film Screening & Discussion hosted in partnership with Maryland Families for Safe Birth

30 US dollars
417 Benninghaus Road Baltimore, MD 21212

Description:

Join us for an evening of film, reflection, and community conversation as we screen Born Free: Birth in America — a 2022 documentary that asks a question every family in this country deserves an answer to: why is the United States the only nation in the developed world with a rising maternal mortality rate? Filmmaker Paula James-Martinez travels across the US to understand what makes it the most dangerous and most expensive nation in the developed world to give birth in — weaving together heartbreaking personal stories, harrowing facts, and the voices of experts in both the medical and legal fields. The film confronts hard truths: why do so many women experience PTSD after birth? Emergency surgery? Anxiety issues? Or bankruptcy? And critically, why are Black birthing people four times more likely to die from childbirth complications than white people — and why do things keep getting worse? This is not just a film about statistics. It's a call to conversation, and to action. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ What to Expect After the screening, we'll come together for a facilitated discussion exploring how we can drive meaningful change, strengthen support systems, and improve outcomes for pregnant and postpartum families across home, hospital, and birth center settings. Our discussion will also touch on the history of birth and how legislation has shaped birth culture over the years, and how you can engage directly with Maryland Families for Safe Birth's advocacy mission. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ A Note on Content This film contains a trigger warning for those who have experienced birth trauma, including gut-wrenching content about obstetric violence, maternal mortality, and postpartum mood disorders. We will take a brief grounding moment after the screening before moving into discussion - you are always welcome to step away and return as needed. Approximately 1.5 hr watch time + 1 hr discussion (optional)
